Graeme Gibson Perpetual Motion (New Canadian Library Series) New Canadian Library 1997 0771034628 / 9780771034626 Mass Market Paperback Like New "Paperback, Like New, clean, tight, unmarked, no spine or cover creases() Set in southern Ontario in the late nineteenth century, at a time when the machine age was coming into its own, Perpetual Motion chronicles the fortunes of settler Robert Fraser, a man obsessed with power and control. Driven by the idea of inventing a perpetual motion machine which will utilize natural energy, he neglects and destroys not only the nature around him but his own family too, as his overbearing rationality becomes a kind of tragic lunacy. First published in 1982, Perpetual Motion is Graeme Gibson’s superb evocation of a time when faith in material progress is still challenged by superstition and a lingering belief in magic. It is an ironic yet compassionate examination of the painful consequences of human folly. From the Hardcover edition. ID: mon0000018551" Price:

Graeme Gibson Uncommon Ground: A Celebration of Matt Cohen A.A. Knopf Canada 2002 0676974856 / 9780676974850 Hardcover Like New "clean, tight, unmarked,() When editors Graeme Gibson, Wayne Grady, Dennis Lee, and Priscila Uppal first planned Uncommon Ground: A Celebration of Matt Cohen, they intended to honour a prominent colleague and winner of the Governor General's Award (for Elizabeth and After), but Cohen's unexpected death from lung cancer in December 1999 (and the subsequent publication of his memoir Typing) changed the nature of the homage. What unites the authors of this collection is their reaction to Cohen's posthumous memoir, in which this reticent but apparently genial figure lashed out at the CanLit establishment and its intolerance of minority voices, revealing a totally unexpected degree of animosity. Piece after piece tries to construct a picture of this very private man while seeking an explanation for his outburst. As a result, what we end up with is a novel (albeit a postmodern one) about a fictitious character, the author Matt Cohen. This effect is only slightly diluted by the inclusion ID: mon0000101810" Price:
