Margaret Wente An Accidental Canadian "HarperCollins Publishers Canada," 2005 0006395090 / 9780006395096 Paperback Like New "Paperback, Like New, clean, tight, unmarked. (Near Fine), no spine or cover creases, shows some handling, remainder mark.() Globe and Mail columnist Margaret Wente's An Accidental Canadian is actually two books struggling to be one. In its first half, it traces the true-life story of Wente's coming-of-age as an expatriate American in suburban Toronto. This is how Wente started smoking. This is how she bought her wedding dress. This is how she waitressed. All interesting if you're really interested in Wente but a smidge tedious if you're not. With that thematic obligation out of the way, though, Wente accelerates, morphing into the writer we're generally concerned with: the cynical one with the arched brow and the pithy, no-nonsense worldview. There's nothing distinctly Canadian about Wente's dissertations on Google, day spas, or obesity but she certainly has worthwhile things to say about all three. And she's often very funny: ID: mon0000064867" Price:
